This medley is composed of two spirituals coming from African-American tradition. It can be either performed with binary form, as it is mentioned in the writing or with swinging ternary form. Swinging arms and clapping hands like African-American choirs do, is recommended. You can swing from right to left on the 1st and 3rd times and clap your hands on the 2nd and 4th times of “Amen.” You can swing and open your arms up and in front of you on “shine” and “love,” lyrics from “This Little Light of Mine.” The last “amen” is sung with increasing semi-tones, as it is often the case in African-American tradition; it creates an exhilarating effect. You will need a soloist to perform this song. It can be sung accompanied or not and the figuration is mentioned.
