This beautiful song is an extract from “Selva morale e spirituale.” This is the most important song of church music that Claudio Monteverdi composed by the end of his life. This motet is unusual by its writing. It is arranged for standard mixed choirs. The homophony contrasts with the soloist part. The score is supported by a continuo. Binary sections alternate with ternary sections, which increase the atmosphere of ritornello when the choir sings.
