This cantata can be performed by two or three mixed voice choirs, narrators and optional melodic instrument accompaniments (violin or clarinet for example).
The story is told by Charlemagne’s nephew Roland. He is the rearguard military leader crossing the Pyrenees. He is already thinking about coming back to France. He is proud and self-confident, but crossing the symbolic mountain will lead him from the climax of his power to his death.
The sheet music lasts about 45 minutes.
