This Christmas carol is probably very old, contrary to its title. Indeed, the melody seems to be modal and the verses sound medieval. It sounds like “Noël de Clunny” (ref. ACJ 9003), 1483. But it could also be an imitation composed later. It can be an incredible imitation, for this carol is one of the most beautiful of the entire repertoire. Many arrangements were made. François Ziberlin arranged a version for choirs and instruments.
