hchedryk, created by a student choir of the University of Kiev in December 1916, contributed to the glory of Leontovych; all the people greeted this small harmonization in which they recognized themselves.
About the composer:
Maykola (or Mykola Dmytrovich) LEONTOVYCH was an ethnomusicologist, composer, teacher and conductor. He studied at the seminaries of Stargorod and Kamenets-Podol'skiy and trained in music mainly by himself.
In 1904 he was a member of the Imperial Chapel in St. Petersburg. From 1918 he was a teacher at the Lisenko Institute of Music in Kiev.
His musical contribution to the harmonization of Ukrainian folk songs is his main work.
